Discover more about Morija Museum & Archives

Nestled in the heart of Morija, a village with a profound historical legacy, the Morija Museum & Archives stands as a testament to Basotho heritage. Founded in 1956 and permanently established in 1989, the museum carries on Morija's tradition as a center for learning, innovation, and cultural preservation. The museum's roots trace back to the collections of the Dieterlen family and the Ellenberger brothers, encompassing ethnographic, historical, paleontological, and geological artifacts. These collections form the cornerstone of the museum's exhibits, which have grown over time through donations from local and international supporters. The archives house documents dating as far back as 1826, offering a glimpse into Lesotho's past. Visitors can explore traditional Basotho artifacts, memorabilia from the Lifaqane and Boer War, and an extensive collection of 19th-century documents. The museum also showcases dinosaur remains discovered in the area, highlighting the region's geological significance. Beyond its exhibits, the Morija Museum & Archives engages in ongoing research, educational programs, and cultural initiatives. The museum has been instrumental in promoting arts and culture through events like the Morija Arts & Cultural Festival and school cultural competitions. The Maeder House Art Gallery and the Morija Arts Centre further contribute to the area's artistic landscape. Morija itself is a village steeped in history, known as 'Sedibeng sa Thuto' or the 'Wellspring of Learning'. It was established in 1833 when King Moshoeshoe I invited French Protestant missionaries to educate his people. The village is home to numerous educational institutions and a conference center, making it a hub of intellectual and cultural exchange.
