Temple of Zeus: A Glimpse into Ancient Cyrene

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Shahat, the Temple of Zeus stands as a monumental testament to the grandeur of ancient Libyan civilization. Originally constructed around 500-480 BC, the temple was dedicated to the king of the Greek gods and was a pivotal part of the ancient city of Cyrene, a hub of culture and commerce in the Mediterranean world. The temple is larger than the Parthenon in Athens, reflecting Cyrene's wealth and importance in the ancient Greek world. The temple faced east and stood atop a three-stepped crepidoma, with a length of 68.3 meters and a width of 30.4 meters. The external colonnade had eight fluted columns at the front and rear and seventeen columns on each of the long sides. The temple was heavily damaged during a Jewish rebellion in 115 AD and later restored. It was destroyed once more in 365 AD by an earthquake and then burnt by Christians.
