The Red Castle itself is a historical site, with archeological evidence indicating that fortresses stood on the location as far back as the Roman Empire. Each successive ruling power added to the structure, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles and decorations. In 1919, the Italian colonial power converted the castle into Libya's first museum. The museum's 47 galleries are spread across four levels, each dedicated to a different period in Libya's history.
