Each successive ruling power added to the structure, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles and decorations. The main gateway dates back to the 16th century and shows the influence of Spanish rulers, who painted the castle red, hence its name. In 1919, the Italian colonial power converted the castle into Libya's first museum.The museum's 47 galleries are spread across four levels, each dedicated to a different period in Libya's history. The ground floor features artifacts from prehistoric and ancient Libyan times, including cave drawings and Berber pottery. The first floor showcases artifacts from Libya's Roman period, including items from the ancient city of Leptis Magna.
