Burg Gutenberg: A Princely Fortress with Panoramic Views

Burg Gutenberg, located in Balzers, Liechtenstein, is one of the country's five castles and one of only two that remain intact. This well-preserved castle, dating back to the 12th century, sits atop a 70-meter hill, offering panoramic views of Balzers and the Rhine Valley. The castle's origins trace back to a medieval church and cemetery. Fortification began in the early 12th century with the addition of a ring wall, forming a simple keep. Over the centuries, it was owned by various nobles, including the Lords of Frauenberg and the House of Habsburg. It served as a strategic point for guarding the borderlands. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle lost its military significance and suffered damage from fires. In the early 20th century, architect Egon Rheinberger restored the castle. Today, Burg Gutenberg is open to the public as a museum, offering insights into Liechtenstein's history. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, including the bailey, which is open year-round, and the rose garden and chapel, which are open on Sundays during the summer. The castle also serves as a venue for cultural events and weddings.
