Discover more about Burg Gutenberg

Gutenberg Castle, rising 70 meters above the village of Balzers in Liechtenstein, presents a captivating journey through time and breathtaking vistas. This well-preserved medieval castle, one of the country's five, began as a church and cemetery in the early 12th century before transforming into a fortified keep. Over the centuries, Gutenberg Castle underwent numerous expansions and ownership changes, serving as a strategic border post for the Habsburgs in the 14th century. Though besieged during the Swabian War in 1499, it was later renovated by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. After a fire in Balzers in 1795, the castle fell into disrepair and was even used as a source of building materials for the town's reconstruction. In the early 20th century, architect Egon Rheinberger meticulously restored the castle, adding a chapel, chaplaincy, and forge. Today, Gutenberg Castle welcomes visitors to explore its grounds and immerse themselves in its rich history. The outer bailey is open year-round, offering panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and the majestic Swiss Alps. During the summer months, the rose garden and chapel are open on Sundays. While the castle itself is not a residence of Liechtenstein's princely family, it stands as a testament to the region's enduring heritage and architectural prowess. The castle also hosts cultural events, including concerts and medieval fairs, providing an authentic experience of Liechtenstein's vibrant community life.
