Car
If you're driving, start by getting onto Route 3 if you're not already on it. Head towards Bar Harbor. Once you reach Bar Harbor, follow the signs for Acadia National Park. Enter the park and continue on the Park Loop Road. Look for the parking area near the Jordan Pond area, as Balance Rock is located nearby. From the parking area, you'll need to hike approximately 0.5 miles following the well-marked trails to reach Balance Rock. Make sure to check if there are any parking fees at Acadia National Park, which may vary depending on the season.
Public Transportation
If you're using public transportation, take the Island Explorer bus service, which operates in and around Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Board the bus at any of the designated stops in Bar Harbor and ride to the Jordan Pond stop. From there, follow the marked trails for about 0.5 miles to reach Balance Rock. The bus service is free to use, but it is recommended to check the schedule in advance for the most current route times.
Bicycle
If you're feeling adventurous, consider renting a bicycle in Bar Harbor. Ride along the scenic Park Loop Road towards Jordan Pond. There are bike paths available and it’s a beautiful ride. Once you reach Jordan Pond, lock your bike at the designated bike racks and take the marked hiking trail to Balance Rock, which is about a 0.5-mile walk. Check with local bike rental shops for rental prices and availability.
Walking
For those already in the vicinity, you can walk to Balance Rock from central Bar Harbor. It’s about a 2.5-mile walk to the Jordan Pond area where Balance Rock is located. Follow the main road out of town (West Street) until you reach the entrance of Acadia National Park. From there, continue walking on the paths that lead towards Jordan Pond, keeping an eye out for signs directing you to Balance Rock. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
