Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
From the main entrance of Dzalanyama Forest Reserve, head east on the main road towards Mitundu. Continue straight for about 30 kilometers until you reach a junction. Take a left turn at the junction and follow the signs towards Mitundu. After approximately 5 kilometers, you will see a sign for Mlare Dam. Turn right and continue for another 2 kilometers until you reach the dam. Note that the last stretch may be on a dirt road, so proceed with caution.
Public Transportation
Start at the main bus station in Lilongwe and take a minibus heading to Mitundu. The fare will cost around 500 MWK. Inform the driver that you want to get off at the Mitundu junction. Once you arrive at the junction, you can either walk the remaining distance (about 7 kilometers) or hire a local taxi for approximately 1,000 MWK to take you directly to Mlare Dam. If you choose to walk, follow the main road towards Mlare Dam, and look for the signs along the way.
Walking
If you're already within Dzalanyama Forest Reserve and prefer to walk, start from the nearest lodge or campsite. Head south towards the main road and follow it to the Mitundu junction. From there, take the left fork towards Mitundu and continue as described in the public transportation section. The total walking distance from the center of the reserve to Mlare Dam is about 10 kilometers, so prepare for a moderately long hike.
