Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest city, Zomba. From Zomba, take the M3 road heading south. After approximately 35 kilometers, you will reach the junction for Lake Chilwa. Turn left onto the road leading to Lake Chilwa and continue for about 10 kilometers until you reach the lake. Keep an eye out for signs indicating 'Lake Chilwa' as you approach. Make sure to check your fuel levels before leaving Zomba, as fuel stations can be sparse in rural areas.
Public Transport
To reach Lake Chilwa via public transport, head to the Zomba bus station. Look for minibus services heading towards Mangochi or Balaka, as these usually pass near Lake Chilwa. The fare is typically around 1,000 MWK (Malawi Kwacha). Inform the driver that you want to get off at Lake Chilwa. The journey may take about 45 minutes to an hour depending on stops. Once you arrive at the Lake Chilwa area, you may need to walk to the lakeshore, which is about 1-2 kilometers from the main road.
Combination of Car and Boat
For a more scenic route, consider driving to the village of Makanjira located on the southern end of Lake Malawi. From there, you can hire a local boat to take you across to Lake Chilwa. The drive from Zomba to Makanjira is about 60 kilometers, taking you through beautiful landscapes. Ensure that your vehicle is suitable for rural roads. The boat ride to Lake Chilwa usually costs around 5,000 MWK and can take around 30 minutes. Always negotiate the fare before the ride.
