If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the nearest major town, Mangochi. From Mangochi, take the A1 road heading north towards Monkey Bay. The road is generally in good condition, but be cautious of potholes and wildlife. After approximately 45 kilometers, you will reach Monkey Bay. At Monkey Bay, look for signs indicating where to catch a boat to Maleri Island. There are several operators available at the harbor. The boat ride to Maleri Island takes about 20-30 minutes, and you should expect to pay around 10,000 to 15,000 MWK for the trip, depending on the operator and the size of the boat.
Public Transportation
To reach Maleri Island via public transportation, start from Mangochi bus station. Board a minibus heading to Monkey Bay. The fare is approximately 1,000 MWK, and the journey takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive at Monkey Bay, proceed to the harbor where you can find boats heading to Maleri Island. The boat ride will cost around 10,000 to 15,000 MWK and takes about 20-30 minutes. It is advisable to check the boat schedules in advance, particularly during the off-peak season, as services may be less frequent.
