Getting There
Car
If you are driving to Mulanje Mountain, start from the town of Mulanje. Head northeast on the main road (A16) towards the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. Follow the signs for the Reserve, which is approximately 20 km from the town. Once you reach the entrance to the forest reserve, you can park your vehicle at the designated parking area. Note that you may need to pay an entrance fee, which is typically around 1,000 MWK (Malawian Kwacha) per person.
Public Transportation (Minibus)
To reach Mulanje Mountain via public transport, take a minibus from Blantyre to Mulanje. The minibuses leave from the Chichiri Bus Station in Blantyre. Once you arrive in Mulanje, head towards the main road and look for a minibus heading to the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. The ride to the reserve will cost you approximately 500 MWK. After reaching the reserve, you can either walk to the entrance or hire a local guide, as it is advisable to have one for your safety and better navigation.
Walking
Once you arrive at the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve, you will need to walk to reach the various hiking trails. The main trailhead is well-marked and starts from the parking area. Make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and carry enough water and snacks. Alternatively, you can also hire a local guide at the entrance, which typically costs around 10,000 MWK for a day's hike, to help you navigate the trails and provide insight into the local flora and fauna.
