Getting There

  • Car

    From Viphya Mountains, drive south towards the M1 road. Take the M1 southbound towards Nkhotakota. The drive will take about 2-3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you reach Nkhotakota, continue south on the M1 until you reach the junction for the B1 road. Turn right onto the B1 towards Mangochi. Continue on the B1 until you reach the town of Mangochi. From Mangochi, follow signs to the nearest access point to Lake Malawi, which is approximately 25 km away. Enjoy the scenic views along the way.

  • Public Transport (Minibus)

    From Viphya Mountains, you can take a minibus to Nkhotakota. Look for minibuses departing from the main bus terminal in the area. The journey to Nkhotakota usually costs between 2,000-3,000 MWK and takes approximately 2-3 hours. Once in Nkhotakota, transfer to another minibus heading towards Mangochi. The fare for this leg should be around 1,500 MWK and the travel time is about 1 hour. After reaching Mangochi, you can either walk to Lake Malawi or hire a local taxi for about 3,000 MWK to take you to the nearest access point.

  • Taxi

    If you prefer more comfort and direct travel, you can hire a taxi from Viphya Mountains. This option is more expensive, with costs ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 MWK depending on negotiation. The taxi will take you directly to Lake Malawi, which should take about 2-3 hours. Ensure to agree on the fare beforehand to avoid misunderstandings.
