Getting There
Car
If you are driving from Zomba town, head southwest on the M3 road. After about 12 kilometers, you will see a sign for Shire Highlands. Turn left onto the road that leads into the highlands. Follow this road for about 5 kilometers, passing through scenic landscapes. Keep your eyes peeled for the breathtaking views and enjoy the ride. Upon reaching the Shire Highlands area, you may need to park your car at designated spots, as some areas may require a small fee for parking.
Public Transportation (Minibus)
From Zomba town, make your way to the minibus station (also known as the 'chapas' station), which is located near the central market. Look for a minibus heading towards Chikala or Phalombe, as these will pass through the Shire Highlands route. The fare should be around 500 MWK (Malawian Kwacha). Once you are on the minibus, inform the driver or conductor that you want to get off at the Shire Highlands stop. The journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. After disembarking, you may have to walk a short distance to reach specific points of interest in the highlands.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous travelers, renting a bicycle in Zomba can be an exciting way to reach Shire Highlands. Bike rentals can be found near the town center. From Zomba, take the M3 road heading southwest. The ride is approximately 12 kilometers and can take around 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Be mindful of traffic and make sure to wear a helmet. Once you reach the sign for Shire Highlands, follow the road into the highlands. This option allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery at your own pace.
