Discover more about Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives

Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, opened in July 2009, is a secluded haven located on the verdant Villingili Island in Addu Atoll, Maldives. As the first luxury resort south of the equator in the Maldives, it offers a unique experience, blending natural beauty with refined elegance. The resort is currently closed indefinitely, but the Maldivian government is aiming to reopen it. The island itself is a tropical paradise, boasting over 17,000 coconut trees, more than six kilometers of coastline, and two kilometers of white sandy beaches. Villingili is also notable for having the highest natural elevation in the Maldives, Mount Villingili, which stands at 5.1 meters above sea level and is located on the island's golf course. While the resort is currently closed, it previously offered 132 villas in various styles, including private water villas, tropical tree houses, and beachside residences. Guests could indulge in a range of activities, from snorkeling and diving in the vibrant coral reefs to exploring the island's nature trails and historical sites. The resort also featured a unique Eco Centre, where guests could learn about the conservation efforts on Villingili Island. Historically, Addu Atoll and Villingili Island have a rich past. During World War II, the British established a secret naval base in Addu Atoll, known as 'Port T,' and remnants of this history can still be found on neighboring islands. A shipwrecked Maldivian dhoni from the 1940s is also displayed near the resort entrance, adding to the island's historical charm.
