Discover more about War Memorial

The War Memorial in Floriana is a poignant reminder of Malta's trials and tribulations during the 20th century's world wars. Designed by Maltese artist Louis Naudi and inaugurated in 1938, the monument initially honored the dead of World War I. In 1949, it was rededicated to include those who perished in World War II, a conflict in which Malta played a crucial role. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk fashioned into a Latin cross, constructed from local globigerina limestone. Four plaques adorn the monument, bearing the colonial badge of Malta and reproductions of significant documents : a message from King George V acknowledging Malta's WWI efforts, King George VI's letter awarding the George Cross to Malta in 1942, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1943 salute to Malta for its WWII role. Located near the Malta Memorial (dedicated to Commonwealth aircrew) and memorials to the Royal Malta Artillery and The King's Own Malta Regiment, the War Memorial occupies a site with a grim history, once used for public executions under Hospitaller rule. Originally positioned between City Gate and Ġlormu Cassar Avenue, it was moved during St. Anne Street's realignment in 1954. Restored in the early 2010s, an eternal flame was added. Today, the President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries lay wreaths at the monument during an annual remembrance ceremony.
