Discover more about Dwejra Tower

Perched on the rugged western cliffs of Gozo, Dwejra Tower stands as a reminder of Malta's defensive past. Constructed in 1652 during the reign of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris, the tower formed part of a network of coastal watchtowers designed to protect the island from corsair landings. The Gozo Municipality funded the tower's construction, providing it with guns and ammunition. Strategically positioned, Dwejra Tower guarded not only the coastline but also access to Fungus Rock, a small islet known for its unique plant, *Cynomorium coccineum*, believed to possess medicinal properties. The Knights of Malta considered this plant highly valuable and took measures to prevent unauthorized access. Throughout its history, Dwejra Tower has served various purposes. It remained in use until 1873, falling into disrepair before being briefly manned during World War I and World War II as an observation post. In 1943, stationed officers rescued a British RAF pilot who crash-landed nearby. In 1997, Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage NGO, leased the tower and began restoring it to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the tower's interior, discover its history through illustrated panels, and enjoy panoramic views of the Dwejra Heritage Park, including the Inland Sea and the site of the former Azure Window. The tower is open when the flag is flying.
