Discover more about Buskett Woodlands

Buskett Woodlands, nestled in the Wied il-Luq valley near Dingli and Siġġiewi, is a unique natural attraction as the only woodland area in Malta. Planted in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John as a hunting ground, it holds significant ecological, historical, and cultural value. The name 'Buskett' comes from the Italian word 'boschetto', meaning 'small wood'. Spanning over 47 hectares, Buskett is home to diverse flora, including holm oak, Aleppo pine, olive, and orange trees. This verdant landscape provides a habitat for various wildlife species, including migratory birds, painted frogs, hedgehogs, and chameleons. Birdwatchers will find it particularly appealing, especially during the spring and autumn migration periods. Adjacent to the woodlands stands the majestic Verdala Palace, built in 1586 by Grand Master Hughes Loubenx de Verdalle. Originally a summer residence and hunting lodge, it now serves as the summer residence of the President of Malta. Visitors can explore walking trails, enjoy picnics in designated areas, and immerse themselves in the tranquility of this green oasis. The annual Imnarja Festival on June 29th brings the woodlands to life with local food, music, and folklore.
