Discover more about Palazzo Santa Sofia

Palazzo Santa Sofia, situated on Triq Santa Sofija in Mdina, Malta, stands as a testament to the city's enduring history. The ground floor of the Palazzo was constructed in 1233, evidenced by an inscription on one of its windows, making it possibly the oldest building in Mdina. The upper floor, in contrast, was built in the 20th century.Originally, the Palazzo had a single story built around a central courtyard. The main entrance was through an arched passageway, or siqifah, leading to the courtyard, which later became a narrow street named Triq Santa Sofia. The ground floor's facade is simple, featuring two doors with the former passageway in between. A two-tiered cornice separates the ground floor from the upper level, similar to Palazzo Falson nearby. The upper floor features ornate mullioned windows and a cornice at roof level. Coats of arms adorn both floors.Throughout its history, Palazzo Santa Sofia has served various purposes, including a school run by Roman Catholic nuns. Today, it is privately owned and managed by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, a heritage foundation. While not generally open to the public, the palace can be hired for private events such as dinners, cocktail parties, and lectures. Palazzo Santa Sofia is listed as a Grade 1 national monument.
