Discover more about Verdala Palace

Verdala Palace, located in the tranquil Buskett Gardens of Siġġiewi, Malta, is a captivating landmark with a rich and varied history. Constructed in 1586 by Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle, it was originally intended as a hunting lodge, designed by the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar. The palace showcases Renaissance architecture, possibly influenced by Villa Farnese in Caprarola, featuring a rectangular layout with distinctive pentagonal turrets at each corner. Over the centuries, Verdala Palace has served multiple purposes. During the French blockade of 1798-1800, it was used as a military prison. Later, under British rule, it was briefly a silk factory before falling into disrepair. Restorations in the 19th century revived its grandeur, and it became the summer residence of the British Governors. Since 1987, it has been the official summer residence of the President of Malta. The palace's exterior is notable for its surrounding stone ditch and symbolic turrets, initially armed with artillery. Inside, the palace boasts ornate interiors, including frescoes and period furnishings. Though primarily closed to the public, the palace occasionally opens for events like the August Moon Ball. Verdala Palace offers panoramic views of the Maltese countryside from its elevated position. Some also say that the palace is haunted by the Blue Lady, adding to its mystique.
