Discover more about Casa Bernard

Nestled in the heart of Rabat, Casa Bernard is a captivating 16th-century palazzo that provides a window into the lives of Malta's noble families. Originally a medieval watch tower built upon Roman foundations, the building evolved into a double-fronted palazzo, later incorporating Baroque additions. In 1723, Dr. Salvatore Bernard, physician to the Grand Master of Malta, resided here, giving the house its name. The Bernard family, a lineage of doctors, called it home until the 20th century. In 1993, Georges and Josette Magri, both retired teachers, acquired the palazzo and embarked on a meticulous restoration, transforming Casa Bernard into a 'very personal museum'. The couple's dedication is evident in every detail, from the barrel-vaulted hallway and family chapel to the dining room, drawing rooms, library, and main bedroom. The house is filled with significant pieces of furniture, paintings, silverware and objets d'art. Casa Bernard isn't just a museum; it's a home that reflects the aristocratic Maltese way of life. Guided tours, often led by the owners themselves, provide insights into the history of the house and the significance of its contents. The tour concludes with a visit to the courtyard and garden, completing the immersive experience.
