    Discover more about Cottonera Lines

The Cottonera Lines, also known as the Valperga Lines, stand as a testament to the military engineering prowess of the Knights of St. John. Constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries, these fortifications were intended to provide a formidable defense for the Three Cities – Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua – and the Grand Harbour. The lines were commissioned by Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner, whose name they bear, in response to fears of an Ottoman attack following the fall of Candia.Designed by the Italian engineer Antonio Maurizio Valperga, the Cottonera Lines were an ambitious project, meant to shelter up to 40,000 people and their livestock in times of siege. The fortifications consist of eight bastions, two demi-bastions, and nine curtain walls, with seven monumental gates providing access to the cities within. Key features include the Notre Dame Gate, the main entrance to the lines, and various bastions such as St. Laurence Demi-Bastion, San Salvatore Bastion, and St. James Bastion.Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Cottonera Lines underwent modifications, including the addition of ammunition warehouses and the linking of the lines to the Santa Margherita Lines. However, parts of the fortifications were also destroyed due to port infrastructure expansion and bombings during World War II. Today, the Cottonera Lines are a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to explore Malta's military history and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
