    Discover more about Fort Rinella

Fort Rinella, located in Kalkara, Malta, is a testament to Victorian-era military engineering. Constructed between 1878 and 1886 by the British, its primary purpose was to house the Armstrong 100-ton gun and defend the Grand Harbour. The British feared losing naval superiority in the Mediterranean to Italy, prompting them to strengthen coastal defenses in Malta and Gibraltar. The fort itself is designed as an irregular pentagon, complete with a deep ditch, underground loading chambers, and ground-level accommodations for soldiers and machinery. The Armstrong 100-ton gun is the main attraction, an 11-meter long behemoth built by Sir William George Armstrong in Newcastle. It was the largest muzzle-loading cannon ever built, capable of firing a one-ton shell every six minutes with a range of up to eight miles. The gun's operation required a hydraulic system, making Fort Rinella the first battery to use mechanical means for its artillery.Although the gun never saw action, it stands as a symbol of British military might and innovation. By 1906, the gun was declared obsolete and the fort was stripped of its machinery. Since 1991, the Malta Heritage Foundation has been restoring the fort, turning it into a living museum. Visitors can explore the fort, view exhibits, and witness historical reenactments that bring the Victorian era to life. These reenactments include military drills, signaling, and swordsmanship displays.
