Discover more about Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a fascinating and mysterious archaeological site in Paola, Malta. Dating back to Malta's Neolithic period (3300-3000 BC), this underground complex served as both a sanctuary and a necropolis. The name 'Hypogeum' itself, meaning 'underground' in Greek, hints at the secrets it holds.Discovered in 1902 during construction work, the Hypogeum is considered one of Malta's most important archaeological finds. The site is constructed entirely underground, consisting of three levels hewn from soft globigerina limestone. These levels are interconnected by a labyrinth of steps, lintels, and doorways. The upper level contains natural caves that were later expanded and used for burial. The middle level features chambers with stylistic similarities to the Megalithic Temples of Malta. The lowest level is thought to have been used for storage, possibly grain storage.Archaeologists estimate that the remains of over 7,000 individuals were found within the Hypogeum. While many bones were lost during early excavations, a significant number of skulls were preserved at the National Museum. Some of these skulls exhibit an unusual cranial elongation, sparking speculation about the beliefs and practices of those who used the Hypogeum.Visiting the Hypogeum is a unique experience. To protect the delicate environment, Heritage Malta strictly controls access, allowing only 80 visitors per day in small groups. Booking tickets well in advance is essential. The tour lasts approximately 50 minutes, with an audio guide providing insights into the history, architecture, and mysteries of this ancient site. Photography is not permitted inside to preserve the site. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required for entry.
