Ġgantija Temples: A Journey Through Neolithic Gozo

The Ġgantija Temples, located on the island of Gozo in Xagħra, are a remarkable testament to Neolithic ingenuity and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maltese Islands. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these megalithic temples date back to between 3600 and 3200 BC, making them older than the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. The name 'Ġgantija' comes from the Maltese word for giant, 'ġgant,' reflecting the local legend that a giantess built the temples.The Ġgantija complex consists of two temples, each with a distinct entrance but sharing a common boundary wall. The temples are constructed from massive megaliths, some weighing over 50 tons, showcasing the advanced construction techniques of the Neolithic builders. The southern temple is the older and larger of the two, featuring five apses.Inside the temples, archaeologists have discovered altar-type structures, hearths with evidence of burning, pottery, and statues, suggesting the site was used for religious rituals, possibly related to a fertility cult. Animal bones and libation holes indicate communal feasts and offerings. The walls were once plastered and painted with red ochre, as evidenced by surviving fragments displayed in the Interpretation Centre.Visitors begin their exploration at the Interpretation Centre, which provides valuable context about the Neolithic period and displays significant artifacts found at Gozitan prehistoric sites. An outdoor pathway then leads to the temples themselves, offering panoramic views of the Gozitan landscape.
