Discover more about Saluting Battery

Perched on Valletta's eastern ramparts, the Saluting Battery is a living testament to Malta's rich military past and offers unparalleled views of the Grand Harbour. Constructed in the 16th century by the Order of Saint John, its origins trace back to the Great Siege of 1565, when Ottoman forces positioned cannons in the area.Initially, the battery served a dual purpose: military defense and ceremonial salutes. Cannons guarded Valletta from naval attacks, while also marking important occasions such as the opening and closing of city gates, state visits, and religious feasts. The battery also served as the island's official time marker, firing cannons at sunrise, noon, and sunset.Throughout its history, the Saluting Battery underwent several changes, including periods of armament replenishment and reduction. It played a role in the blockade of 1798-1800 and World War II. Although the British removed the guns in 1954, the site was restored in the early 21st century. Today, the battery features eight working replicas of SBBL 32-pounder cannons that fire daily at 12:00 and 16:00. Visitors can explore the battery, witness the gun firing ceremonies, and delve into Maltese history through exhibits and guided tours.
