    Discover more about Ta' Ħaġrat

Nestled on the eastern edge of Mġarr, the Ta' Ħaġrat temples offer a captivating journey into Malta's ancient past. These megalithic structures, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are among the earliest religious sites on Earth, with the larger temple dating back to 3600–3200 BC (Ġgantija phase) and the smaller to 3300–3000 BC (Saflieni phase).Constructed from lower coralline limestone, the temples stand as testaments to the ingenuity of Neolithic builders. The larger temple boasts a trefoil plan with a concave facade and a monumental doorway leading to a central court and three semi-circular chambers. A unique stepped doorway and a low stone bench along the facade add to its impressive features. The smaller temple, adjoined to the north, exhibits a simpler four-apse design with smaller stones.Excavations at Ta' Ħaġrat have revealed that a village predated the temples, with pottery finds dating back to 3800-3600 BC (Mġarr phase). Although no decorated blocks were found, a scale model of a temple sculpted in globigerina limestone was discovered, offering insights into the original appearance of these megalithic structures. Today, Ta' Ħaġrat offers visitors a glimpse into prehistoric Malta, with its well-preserved structures and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
