Discovered in 1913 by local farmers, the temples provide invaluable insights into the religious and social practices of Neolithic Malta. The temple complex consists of four interconnected temples, each with its unique features. The South Temple is renowned for its intricate carvings, including reliefs of domestic animals and spiral designs. The Central Temple boasts a unique six-apse plan, suggesting limited access for an elite group. The East Temple, the oldest of the structures, retains its five-apse layout. The newest temple displays elaborate decorative motifs.Archaeological discoveries at Tarxien indicate the site was used for animal sacrifice and possibly ancestor worship. Later, during the Bronze Age (2400-1500 BC), the site was reused as a cremation cemetery. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved remains, including the iconic spiral carvings and the relief of two bulls and a sow.
