Discover more about Upper Barrakka

Perched atop the historic city of Valletta, the Upper Barrakka Gardens provide a serene escape with breathtaking views. Originally created in 1661 as a private garden and exercise ground for the Knights of St. John, specifically those of the Italian langue, the gardens were opened to the public in 1800 after the French occupation. The gardens are located on the upper tier of the St. Peter and Paul Bastion, offering an unhindered view of the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua), and the surrounding cityscape. The terraced arches, dating back to 1661 and designed by the Italian knight Fra Flaminio Balbiani, add to the garden's architectural charm. Today, the Upper Barrakka Gardens host a collection of statues, monuments, and plaques that commemorate significant figures and events in Maltese history. A notable sculpture is 'Les Gavroches' by Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino, depicting three children and symbolizing the hardships faced by the Maltese population in the early 20th century. The gardens also feature a bust of Sir Winston Churchill and a monument to Sir Alexander Ball. Below the gardens lies the Saluting Battery, where cannons are fired daily at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm in a ceremonial salute, a tradition rooted in Malta's naval history. The Barrakka Lift connects the gardens to the Grand Harbour, providing quick access to the Valletta Waterfront.
