The tower was built to deter attacks by pirates and the Turkish. The tower's design is similar to earlier Lascaris towers in Malta, featuring a rectangular structure and a flat roof where guns were mounted. However, Xlendi Tower uniquely includes an additional platform with a sloped base on its seaward side.
