    Xlendi Tower, a historic watchtower near Xlendi Bay in Gozo, Malta, stands as a proud testament to the island's strategic importance and rich history. Constructed in 1650 during the reign of Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellar of the Knights of St. John, it is the oldest of Gozo's existing coastal watchtowers. The tower was built to deter attacks by pirates and the Turkish.The tower's design is similar to earlier Lascaris towers in Malta, featuring a rectangular structure and a flat roof where guns were mounted. However, Xlendi Tower uniquely includes an additional platform with a sloped base on its seaward side. Originally armed with two six-pounder guns, later replaced by four-pounder guns, the tower was manned by a commander, a gunner, and three watchmen.For over two centuries, Xlendi Tower played a vital role in safeguarding Gozo's coastline. During the British era, it served in an anti-smuggling capacity and as a coast observation post during World War II. Today, after undergoing restoration, the tower is open to the public, offering panoramic views of Xlendi Bay and the surrounding Mediterranean landscape. Visitors can explore its interior and learn about its history, while also enjoying the walking trails and photo opportunities in the area.
