Gozo Aqueduct: A Testament to 19th-Century Engineering

The Gozo Aqueduct, located near Kerċem, is a remarkable relic of British engineering on the island of Gozo. Built between 1839 and 1843, it was designed to transport water from the Għar Ilma spring, meaning "Cave of Water", to the capital city of Victoria. The aqueduct served as a vital water supply for the growing population, storing water in a reservoir within the ditch of the Cittadella.Constructed of a series of stone arches, the aqueduct stretches across the Gozitan countryside, a testament to the engineering capabilities of the time. Its design might lead some to believe it is of Roman origin, but it was built well before modern plumbing made such structures obsolete. After the aqueduct was replaced by a system of pipes and electrical pumps, it fell into disrepair, with sections collapsing over time.Despite its ruined state, the Gozo Aqueduct remains an iconic landmark, valued by locals and tourists alike. Significant portions of the arches still stand, offering a glimpse into the island's history and a unique photo opportunity. The government has recognized its historical importance and has been working to stabilize and restore the aqueduct since 2021.
