Discover more about Gunpowder Arsenal, Fort Chambray

Fort Chambray, or Forti Xambrè in Maltese, is a bastioned fort located near Ghajnsielem on the island of Gozo. Constructed in the mid-1700s by the Order of Saint John, it was envisioned as a new city to replace the Cittadella as Gozo's capital. This ambitious plan, however, never fully materialized. The fort's history is rich and varied. It saw action during the French invasion of Malta in 1798. Later, it served as a military hospital and, for many years, as a mental institution. A section even functioned as a leprosarium for a time. Today, Fort Chambray has been redeveloped into a luxury residential complex. While offering modern amenities like swimming pools and landscaped gardens , the original bastions and architectural details have been preserved, offering a unique glimpse into the past. The location provides stunning views of Gozo, Comino, and Malta. Although now a private gated community, its historical significance and imposing structure continue to make it a landmark on Gozo.
