Discover more about Fort St. Angelo

Fort St. Angelo stands as a powerful symbol of Malta's strategic importance and rich military heritage. Situated at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, dominating the Grand Harbour, this historic site has been at the heart of Malta's defense for centuries. Originally, the site was home to a temple dedicated to Astarte, a Phoenician goddess. By the 13th century, a medieval castle known as Castrum Maris stood here. In 1530, the Knights of St. John transformed the abandoned castle into their headquarters, renaming it Fort St. Angelo. The Knights significantly remodelled the structure, adding artillery platforms and introducing the bastioned system of defense to Malta. The fort played a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565, successfully resisting the Ottoman invasion. In 1689, military engineer Carlos Grunenbergh spearheaded the fort's transformation into a formidable coastal defense, including four gun platforms capable of holding fifty artillery pieces. From 1800 to 1979, under British rule, the fort was designated as a stone ship, and renamed HMS Egmont and later HMS St. Angelo. It served as the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet headquarters and endured 69 direct hits during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the fort's various architectural styles and experience its colorful history through immersive displays. The upper part of the fort, including the Magistral Palace, the Keep, and the Chapel of St. Anne, is open to the public. Fort St. Angelo offers panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and surrounding fortified towns, providing a unique insight into Malta's past.
