Discover more about Hagar Qim Temple

Hagar Qim, meaning 'Standing/Worshipping Stones' in Maltese, is a captivating megalithic temple complex located on the southern coast of Malta. Dating back to the Ġgantija phase (3600–3200 BC), it is among the most ancient religious sites on Earth and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple complex consists of a main temple and three additional megalithic structures. The main temple's design features a monumental facade leading to a central passage connecting oval chambers and semi-circular recesses.Constructed from local globigerina limestone, the temple showcases the remarkable engineering skills of Neolithic builders. The complex incorporates massive stones, some weighing over 20 tons, which were erected without modern tools or machinery. One of the most impressive features is the 5.2-meter high monolith, the largest used in Maltese megalithic temples, weighing nearly 60 tons.Archaeological excavations have revealed insights into the temple's purpose, suggesting it was a center for spiritual and communal activities. Artifacts discovered at the site include altars, pottery, and statuettes, indicating its role in religious rituals and ceremonies. The temple's design also demonstrates an advanced understanding of astronomy, with its central doorway aligned to the summer solstice sunrise, allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the temple. Just 500 meters from Hagar Qim lies the Mnajdra temple complex, which is included in the entrance fee. A visit to both sites typically takes 90 minutes to three hours.
