The Mdina Gate, or Il-Bieb tal-Imdina in Maltese, stands as a magnificent portal to the fortified city of Mdina, often called the 'Silent City'. Constructed in 1724 during the reign of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, it exemplifies Baroque architecture and design. The gate was designed by French architect Charles François de Mondion.Originally, the main entrance to Mdina consisted of three gates separated by courtyards. However, in 1722, Grand Master Vilhena ordered a restoration of Mdina, including the construction of the new gate. The new gate was built a few meters to the left of the original gate. The original gate was walled up, and the courtyards were demolished to make way for Palazzo Vilhena.Notable features of the gate include double pilasters, a Latin inscription, and the coats of arms of Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena and the city of Mdina. Statues of St. Paul, St. Publius, and St. Agatha, patron saints of Malta, adorn the inner side of the gate. The gate is also famous for its appearance in the television series Game of Thrones, where it was used as a filming location for King's Landing.Today, the Mdina Gate is a major tourist attraction and a Grade 1 national monument. Visitors can explore the historic city, wander its narrow streets, and admire the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
