Mistra Gate, or Bieb tal-Mistra in Maltese, is a historical gateway located in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. Constructed in 1760, the gate served as the principal entrance to a vast estate belonging to the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi, an organization established in 1607 to collect funds for the redemption of Christian slaves in Muslim territories. The estate was bequeathed to the Monte di Redenzione by noblewoman Caterina Vitale in 1619 and once included the land where Selmun Palace was later built. The gate itself is a fine example of Baroque architecture, adorned with the coats of arms of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, the Monte di Redenzione, and Balì Claudius de Montagne de Lafeuliere and Balì Carlo Maria Olgiati. A farmhouse, once part of the estate, is situated near the gate, along with a marker indicating the property limits. The funds of the Monte di Redenzione were transferred to the State when Napoleon arrived in Malta in 1798, and the land became government property. The gate has undergone several restorations throughout its history. It was first restored in 1937 and again in the 1990s by the University of Malta. Today, Mistra Gate is a Grade 1 national monument, with the nearby farmhouse and property marker scheduled as Grade 2. Visitors can appreciate the gate's architectural details and historical significance, offering a glimpse into Malta's past.
