Palazzo Santa Sofia, located on Triq Santa Sofija in Mdina, is steeped in history, with its ground floor dating back to 1233. This makes it arguably the oldest building in Mdina, offering a tangible connection to the city's medieval past. The upper floor, constructed in the 20th century, reflects a later architectural style, creating a captivating blend of old and new.Originally built around a central courtyard, the palace incorporated a siqifah, an arched passageway leading to the courtyard. This passageway has since been transformed into a narrow street, Triq Santa Sofia, further embedding the palace into the urban fabric of Mdina. The façade features a two-tiered palline losanghe cornice separating the ground floor from the upper floor, a detail similar to that of the nearby Palazzo Falson. The upper floor is distinguished by ornate mullioned windows and another palline losanghe cornice at roof level. Coats of arms adorn both floors of the façade, adding to the building's historical character.Throughout its history, Palazzo Santa Sofia has served various purposes, including a school run by Roman Catholic nuns. Today, it is privately owned and managed by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, a local heritage foundation. While not open for general public tours, the palace can be hired for private events such as dinners, cocktail parties, and lectures. Its Grade 1 national monument status and listing in the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands underscore its importance to Malta's cultural heritage.
