Discover more about St. Elmo

Fort St. Elmo, located at the tip of Valletta on the Sciberras Peninsula, has been a pivotal point in Malta's history. Built by the Knights of St. John in 1552 in just four months, it strategically guards the Marsamxett and Grand Harbours. The fort faced its most severe test during the Great Siege of 1565 when it withstood Ottoman attacks for 30 days, though ultimately fell, resulting in the death of around 1,500 knights and Maltese defenders. The fort's resilience, however, was a crucial factor in the eventual victory over the Turks. Throughout the years, Fort St. Elmo has been modified and strengthened by various rulers of Malta. It played a significant role in World War II, enduring heavy aerial bombardments. Today, the fort has been meticulously restored and houses Malta's National War Museum, displaying military artifacts from the Bronze Age to Malta's entry into the EU. Visitors can explore the fort's grounds, including the Chapel of St. Anne, the final resting place of knights who died during the Great Siege. The National War Museum features exhibits such as the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 FAITH, Roosevelt's Jeep 'Husky', and the George Cross awarded to Malta for gallantry. The fort also offers stunning views of Valletta and the surrounding harbors.
