Discover more about The Red Tower

Perched atop the Marfa Ridge in Mellieħa, St. Agatha's Tower, or the Red Tower, is a commanding 17th-century fortification with a rich history. Constructed between 1647 and 1649 by the Knights of St. John during the reign of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar, it formed part of a network of coastal defenses designed to protect Malta from invasion. Its location was strategically chosen to provide clear views of Mellieħa Bay, Comino, and Gozo, enabling effective communication between Valletta and the surrounding areas. The tower's design is square with four corner turrets, giving the impression of bastions. The thick walls, measuring approximately 4 meters, provided robust protection against attack. Originally, the entrance was accessed via a drawbridge. Inside, the tower housed a garrison of around 30 men, with enough ammunition and food to withstand a 40-day siege. A cistern collected rainwater from the roof, ensuring a water supply for the soldiers. The tower also had a small chapel dedicated to Saint Agatha, a Christian martyr.Over the centuries, the Red Tower played various roles, including serving as a signal station during the British period and a radar station during World War II. After a period of neglect, Din l-Art Ħelwa, a heritage organization, restored the tower between 1999 and 2001. Today, visitors can explore the tower, admire the panoramic views from the roof, and learn about its history through exhibits. The Red Tower stands as a testament to Malta's strategic importance and the enduring legacy of the Knights of St. John.
