Car
From anywhere in Cape Cod, head towards Route 6. If you are in Hyannis, take Route 132 North towards Route 6. Merge onto Route 6 (Mid-Cape Highway) heading East. Continue on Route 6 for approximately 20 miles. Take exit 11 toward Wellfleet/Truro. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Route 6A. Follow Route 6A and take a right onto Chequessett Neck Road. Continue on Chequessett Neck Road until you reach the Great Island trailhead. Parking is available, but be aware that there may be a fee for parking depending on the time of year.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, start by taking the CapeFLYER train from Boston to Hyannis (seasonal service). From Hyannis, use the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) bus service that operates on the Cape Cod Transit routes. Take the bus towards Wellfleet. Once you arrive in Wellfleet, you will need to transfer to a local taxi service or rideshare to reach Chequessett Neck Road. Note that public transit options may have limited schedules, especially outside of peak tourist season, so be sure to check the CCRTA website for current routes and times.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous, consider biking to Great Island. If you are staying in Wellfleet, use the local bike paths that connect to Chequessett Neck Road. Make sure to follow the designated bike lanes and paths for safety. The ride may take around 15-30 minutes depending on your starting point within Wellfleet. Bring water and snacks for your journey, as there are no facilities along the trail.
