Getting There

  • Public Transit - Bus

    From downtown New Bedford, walk to the nearest bus stop at the intersection of Purchase Street and Union Street. Take the GATRA bus route toward Providence, which typically runs every hour. Make sure to check the schedule for the exact times. After about 45 minutes, you will arrive at the Rhode Island State House stop in Providence. From there, it's a short 10-minute walk to the Providence River Walk. Head south on Smith Street, turn right onto US-44, and continue walking until you see the river.

    If you prefer to walk and are up for a longer journey, start at the New Bedford Whaling Museum located at 18 Johnny Cake Hill. Walk north on Johnny Cake Hill and turn left onto Union Street. Continue until you reach the intersection with Purchase Street. Turn right on Purchase Street and follow it as it becomes Route 18. This route will take you out of New Bedford. It's about a 2-hour walk, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a long trek. Along the way, enjoy the views of the harbor.

    You can rent a bicycle from one of the local rental shops in New Bedford, such as New Bedford Bike Tour. Once you have your bike, head north on Elm Street, then take a left on Route 18. Follow Route 18 until you reach the outskirts of the city. The ride to Providence River Walk is approximately 7 miles and should take about 30-45 minutes. Be sure to wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules. Once you reach the river, park your bike at one of the bike racks available along the walkway.
