Getting There

  • Car

    From downtown Newburyport, head southeast on State Street toward Merrimack Street. Turn right onto Merrimack Street, then take a left onto Route 1 South. Continue on Route 1 for about 2 miles, then take the exit toward Route 1A/Plum Island. Merge onto Plum Island Turnpike, and continue for approximately 3 miles. The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center will be on your left at 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking is available on-site.

    Take the MBTA Commuter Rail from Newburyport Station towards North Station in Boston. Transfer at the Newburyport Station to the local bus service (MVRTA Route 54) towards Plum Island. The bus will take you along Route 1A, and you should disembark at the stop nearest to Plum Island Turnpike. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Visitor Center at 6 Plum Island Turnpike. Note: Check the MVRTA schedule for current fares and times.
