If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Mexico City. Take the Mexico-Pachuca highway (Mexico 85D) and head towards Pachuca. After reaching Pachuca, look for the signs pointing to the highway towards Actopan and then to the highway towards Cardonal. Continue following the signs for Grutas Tolantongo. The total driving distance is approximately 200 km and will take around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. Once you arrive, there will be a parking area where you can leave your vehicle.
Public Transportation (Bus)
For those opting for public transportation, start by taking a bus from Mexico City to Pachuca. Buses leave frequently from the Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Pasajeros de Observatorio. Once in Pachuca, you will need to transfer to a bus heading to Cardonal. These buses can be found at the Pachuca bus station. Upon arriving at Cardonal, you can take a local taxi or colectivo (shared taxi) to get to Grutas Tolantongo. Be sure to confirm with the driver that they are heading to Grutas Tolantongo for the best experience. The total travel time will be about 4 to 5 hours, including waiting times.
Taxi or Ride-Sharing
If you prefer a more direct route after reaching Cardonal, you can hire a taxi or use a ride-sharing app to reach Grutas Tolantongo. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand or check if the app provides a fare estimate. The taxi ride from Cardonal to Grutas Tolantongo usually costs around 200 to 300 pesos and takes approximately 30 minutes.
