If you're traveling by car, start by heading to US-45 North from any major road in the Lower Peninsula. If you're coming from Detroit, for instance, take I-75 North to US-10 West, then connect to US-45 North toward Bruce Crossing. Continue on US-45 for approximately 50 miles until you reach Bruce Crossing. The Paulding Lights are located about 12 miles west of Bruce Crossing. Turn left onto Paulding Light Road (also known as County Road 107) and follow the road to the viewing area, which is well-marked.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited in this remote area. However, you can take a Greyhound bus to either Ironwood or Houghton. From either location, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to Bruce Crossing, which is about 40 miles away. Once in Bruce Crossing, follow the directions for cars to reach Paulding Light Road. Be sure to check the bus schedules in advance to ensure you arrive at a suitable time.
Bicycle
For those who are adventurous and physically fit, consider biking to The Paulding Lights. Starting from Bruce Crossing, you can rent a bicycle and ride along County Road 107. The distance from Bruce Crossing to the viewing area is about 12 miles. Keep in mind the terrain can be hilly, so be prepared for a workout. Be sure to wear appropriate safety gear and carry water.
Walking
Walking to The Paulding Lights is not recommended due to the distance and the rural nature of the area. However, if you're already in Bruce Crossing, you can walk to the viewing area along Paulding Light Road. It is approximately a 12-mile walk, which could take several hours, so plan accordingly and ensure you have enough daylight.
