Discover more about African American Monument

The African American Monument stands on Grant Avenue within the Vicksburg National Military Park, a solemn reminder of the contributions of African Americans during the Civil War. Dedicated in 2004, it is the first monument within the park specifically honoring the African American troops. The monument, sculpted by Dr. Kim Sessums, features three bronze figures atop a black African granite base. Two figures represent Black Union soldiers, while the third is a field hand. The field hand and one soldier support the wounded second soldier, symbolizing the sacrifices made by African Americans on the battlefield. The field hand looks back at a past of slavery, while the soldier gazes forward toward a future of freedom. Over 178,000 African American soldiers served in the Union Army, with another 18,000 in the Navy. Their participation in the Vicksburg campaign, particularly at Port Hudson and Milliken's Bend, proved their bravery and fighting ability, helping to dispel doubts and win the confidence of many. The monument serves as a tribute to their courage and the significant impact they had on the war's outcome.
