Discover more about Stockade Redan

Stockade Redan, situated within Vicksburg National Military Park, marks the site of intense fighting during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. This Confederate fortification, part of a complex guarding Graveyard Road, played a vital role in the defense of the city. The redan, a triangular-shaped fort, was connected to a lunette (a half-moon-shaped fort) by a stockade wall made of poplar logs, hence the name. This strategic design allowed Confederate troops to fire upon the flanks of any advancing Union army. Union forces, under General William T. Sherman, launched two major assaults on Stockade Redan on May 19 and May 22. Despite facing heavy casualties and struggling through difficult terrain, the Confederate garrison successfully repelled both attacks. The failure of these assaults contributed to General Grant's decision to initiate a siege, which ultimately led to the Confederate surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. Today, visitors can explore the remaining earthworks, read interpretive signs, and reflect on the events that unfolded here, gaining insight into the strategic importance of this site and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides.
