Discover more about Curchi Monastery

Curchi Monastery, located in the picturesque Vatici valley, is a true testament to Moldovan spirituality and architectural heritage. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, the monastery began as a modest wooden hermitage. Over time, it evolved into one of the richest, largest, and most beautiful monasteries in Moldova. The monastery's architectural ensemble, primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries, includes five churches, monastic cells, administrative buildings, and a bell tower, harmoniously integrated into the lush landscape. The main church, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, showcases Baroque and Neoclassical styles, with its design inspired by the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv. Its red-and-white walls and golden domes make it a visual masterpiece. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful frescoes and religious icons. Throughout its history, Curchi Monastery has faced turbulent times. During World War II, it suffered fire damage, and during the Soviet era, it was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital from 1959 to 1995, leading to neglect and damage. However, since Moldova's independence in 1991, extensive restoration work has revived the complex, restoring its former glory. Today, Curchi Monastery stands as a symbol of resilience and spirituality, inviting visitors to experience its peaceful atmosphere and learn about Moldovan religious traditions. The monastery is surrounded by forests, gardens, and orchards, offering a tranquil escape. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the architecture, and find inner peace in this spiritual haven.
