The Triumphal Arch, also known as the Arcul de Triumf, is located in the center of Chișinău, next to the Nativity Cathedral. It was constructed in 1840 by architect Luka Zauschevici to celebrate the Russian Empire's triumph over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829.The arch was initially intended to serve as a bell tower, housing a massive 6.4-ton bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. However, the bell proved too large for the cathedral's belfry, leading to the construction of the arch to accommodate it. The bell symbolized both military victory and local craftsmanship. The Triumphal Arch is a neoclassical monument with a square design and two levels, standing 13 meters tall. Its four pillars feature Corinthian-style capitals, and the upper level is adorned with classical decorations and a mechanical clock. The structure is built from polished white stone and decorated with ceramic ornaments, showcasing the neoclassical style prevalent in 19th-century Europe.Throughout its history, the arch has undergone several restorations and name changes, including Arch of Victory during Soviet times and Holy Gates. Memorial plaques dedicated to Soviet heroes were added in 1945 but removed in 1991 after independence. Today, the Triumphal Arch is a beloved symbol of Chișinău and a starting point for exploring the city's rich history and culture.
