Originally constructed as a wooden fort in 1499 by Prince Stephen the Great to guard a crucial river crossing, it was rebuilt in stone between 1543 and 1546 during the reign of Petru Rareș. The fortress is a marvel of late medieval military architecture, boasting a perfectly circular design with a diameter of 37.5 meters and five equally spaced bastions. This unique design ensured no blind spots, offering optimal defense against invaders.Throughout history, Soroca Fortress played a vital strategic role. It successfully repelled Ottoman forces during the Great Turkish War and served as a meeting point for Moldovan and Russian troops during the Prut Campaign of 1711. The fortress also functioned as a customs point for merchants, contributing to the region's economic activity. Legends whisper of a white stork that saved the fortress defenders during a Tatar siege by bringing them grapes, symbolizing victory through faith.
