    Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located approximately 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich history and Orthodox traditions. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in the region.Founded possibly as early as the 6th century BC, the monastery's origins are shrouded in legend. Some believe monks first inhabited the caves in the 10th-12th centuries, while others suggest the 16th-18th centuries. Regardless, the site's strategic location offered refuge and a place of worship for centuries. The monastery is comprised of three main religious chambers and numerous monastic cells, all connected by precarious steps carved into the cliff face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, dating from the 15th century, houses an active church and a small museum.Throughout its history, Tipova Monastery has experienced periods of prosperity and destruction. In 1776, the monastery underwent significant expansion, with massive columns dividing its sections. However, during the Soviet era, the monastery was closed and suffered considerable damage. In 1975, the ruins were placed under state protection, and religious services resumed in 1994.Legends intertwine with the monastery's history. It is said that Stephen the Great, a revered Moldovan ruler, married his wife Maria Voichita here. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and is buried near a waterfall. Visitors to Tipova Monastery can explore the cave chambers, admire the ancient frescoes, and soak in the breathtaking views of the Dniester River and surrounding landscape. The site also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the nearby Tipova nature reserve, home to waterfalls and diverse wildlife.
