Overview
Căpriana Monastery, located 40 km northwest of Chișinău, is a serene escape into Moldova's rich history and spiritual heritage. Established in 1429 during the reign of Alexander the Good, the monastery initially served as a royal foundation. The monastery is surrounded by the ancient Codrii Lăpușnei forests, offering a tranquil and picturesque setting.Throughout its history, Căpriana Monastery has been patronized by numerous Moldavian rulers, including Stephen the Great and Petru Rareș, contributing to its architectural and cultural significance. The monastery complex features three churches: the Church of the Dormition (the oldest extant church in Moldova), the winter church of St. George, and the Church of St. Nicholas. The Church of the Dormition houses the tomb of Metropolitan Gavril Bănulescu-Bodoni.Over the centuries, Căpriana Monastery has been a vital center for Moldavian culture, preserving a vast collection of manuscripts and religious artifacts. The site holds a special place in the nation's identity, representing the cradle of Moldavian language, architecture, and music. During the Soviet era, the monastery was closed and repurposed as a sanatorium and storage facility, but it was reopened in 1989 and has since been restored as a symbol of national revival. Today, Căpriana Monastery welcomes visitors to explore its historical grounds, admire its architecture, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this spiritual sanctuary.
