Overview
Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei, or the Seat Fortress of Suceava, is a captivating medieval fortress located on the eastern edge of Suceava, Romania. Constructed in the late 14th century by Prince Peter Mușat, it served as the main residence for Moldavian princes for nearly two centuries. Perched on a plateau overlooking the Suceava River valley, the fortress was strategically positioned to defend the capital from Ottoman threats.Throughout its history, the fortress underwent significant modifications, particularly during the reign of Stephen the Great in the 15th century. He reinforced the structure with a surrounding enceinte, strengthening its defenses against invaders. The fortress withstood numerous sieges and played a vital role in protecting Moldavia. Famous rulers such as Alexander the Good, Petru Rareș, and Vasile Lupu resided within its walls. In 1600, Prince Michael the Brave peacefully seized the fortress. However, in 1675, it was destroyed by Dumitrașcu Cantacuzino.Today, the Fortress of Suceava has been meticulously restored and serves as a museum, offering visitors an immersive experience into the region's history. Explore the ramparts, courtyards, and exhibition halls showcasing medieval artifacts, weaponry, and princely treasures. The fortress also hosts cultural events and festivals, including a medieval art festival in August, bringing history to life. Don't miss the captivating video projections at night that recreate medieval battle scenes.
